Triathlon

I am a Level 2 Diploma Triathlon Coach. I have been Head Coach (voluntary) of Chichester Triathlon Club for several years.

I regularly coach club sessions, spending 5 years coaching the youth section before handing that over and focusing again on the adults. I provide group coaching and 1-1 coaching, which has all been done to support the club’s finances rather than receiving any personal payment.

Coaching Services

1-1 coaching is there to support you in achieving your triathlon goals. If geography allows, this can be face to face, but otherwise sessions can be online.

Usually coachees purchase their own training plan to form the basis of their programme, but this 1-1 coaching then supports the athlete in adapting it to their own needs, ambitions and other commitments. If athletes pick a programme from Training Peaks, I can link our two accounts and am then able to track progress, see data and add/adapt specific sessions.

Initially we will go through an audit/baseline of current strengths and identified limiting factors. Depending on the athlete, we can structure this through British Triathlon pro-formas or use those as a framework for a more general conversation – as with most things, everything is personalised to how you work best and how you want the coaching relationship to operate.

Coaching could be technical or more data-focused, looking at how the plan is progressing, fitness is developing, health is maintaining/improving and how the next month could/should shape up. Ideas for sessions, for periodisation, races, off-season activities and challenges – whatever you need, this coaching can help raise your game to the next level.

Some athletes prefer to be told what to do; others respond better to a more questioning approach so that they do some of the thinking and take some ownership of their preparations. Whilst I prefer the latter approach, I am flexible to meet the unique demands of each athlete.

Outcomes

Outcomes will be personal to the individual, but ‘goal-setting and goal getting’ will  be part of the coaching process.

Outcomes may be performance-orientated but with so many variables in triathlon racing or events, outcomes will be personalised to the distance, terrain and ambitions of the athlete.

Our aim will be to get you to your start line feeling confident and in great health. That confidence will come from having done the correct training; the great health will come from having prevented injuries and maintained a healthy balance between training and wider life.

Once over the start line, the execution of the plan will be down to the athlete, but once over the line the support comes through the debrief and analysis with an eye on the next challenge ahead.

Feedback from Coachees

Thanks again for all of your support, training and encouragement and for being the
“coach on my shoulder”

Neil, first-time Ironman (aged 62)

Really happy with this year's support…greatly appreciate the support and help.

Athlete

Key strengths of Shaun's coaching are listening, advising and letting me then decide what to do

Athlete

Athlete A, already a European AG standard distance champion, not only repeated that success but, through my encouragement, progressed up to middle-distance through the virtual races offered during lockdown. In his first race he qualified for the World's (which were subsequently postponed). As what I hope is a reflection of my principles as a coach, my first comment to him was "I need to find you a better coach!".
